A Ripple of Kindness

Today at lunch, a woman I didn't recognized approached me. She said, "I want to thank you for the school." I wasn't sure what she was talking about and wondered if she mistook me for someone else. Then, she said, "We are all going to the school." She started listing off the names of people going to "school", then she turns and looks toward the kitchen. I see a man I met a year or more ago with bright eyes and a huge smile on his face. He waves, and it all makes sense.

I met this man by chance. He worked in the kitchen at a Thai restaurant, and he happened to be filling in for the sushi chef one day. He told me that he and his wife moved here from Thailand to work. His friend was supposed to bring their 12 year old daughter, but something happened. So, she was stuck in Thailand. He felt helpless because he spoke little English and could not read English. He didn't know what to do. I offered the help I could that day, then I researched free classes to learn English. A few days later, I went back and left instructions for him with a waiter there.

I had forgotten about it. Today, I met his wife. She was the woman who came out of the kitchen to thank me. Their daughter is now here with them! All of the kitchen staff is going to "school" and learning English. Their smiles and bright eyes were a gift to me.
